Vis Town and Peninsula Prurovo

History of Town Vis

Vis is a town located on the north side of the island of Vis in a little bay. The oldest known inhabitants of Vis were Illyrian Liburni and Greek. They founded the town Vis in 4. century B.C. Vis was then called Issa. During Roman empire, the town and the island was under Roman authority for several hundred years, then some time under Byzantium, before it became part of Croatian state. Walls of the Greeks town are partly preserved. On the small peninsula Prurovo in front of the town there are remains of ancient Roman theater. A collection of ancient coins was found on the site of Vis. The coins are exibited in archeological museums in Split and Zagreb.
