Poreč

Poreč

History of Town Poreč

Poreč is a town on the coast of Istria peninsula in Croatia. The existence of natural harbor and settlement on the site was the reason why as early as 2nd century B.C. a Roman castrum was built there, and in the 1st century the town became Julia Paternium colony. The establishment of the Roman settlement brought a typical town structure with two diagonal streets Cardum and Decumanus, of which the latter is still in use today. Classic Roman urban structure of Poreč is, besides the structure of Zadar, a rare example in the Adriatic region. The most famous part of the cultural and artistic enrichment of Poreč is definitely the Euphrasios Basilica. The oldest part of the basilica is Maur's Oratory from 3rd century, built as an ecclesia domestica where prosecuted Christians had an assembly. There is preserved document about the existance of members of Poreč early Christian congregation.
