Jelsa is a town on the island of Hvar. It is only three kilometers away from Vrboska. In order to come to Jelsa, take a one-hour trip by ferry or catamaran from Split. This way you arrive in port Stari Grad, from where you can drive few kilometers to Jelsa. The town is located on the northern coast of the island. It has several hotels and many private apartments and rooms to rent by local hosts. A daily boat trip is available to tourists to Bol with its famous Golden Horn Beach on the island of Brač, which is located just across the channel between Hvar and Brač.
Although historical remains left from ancient times around the town, Jelsa was actually founded in 15. century around once solitary church of St. John. The town square was formed around it. The town has a small port since it is located in little bay. There is a road along the coast, with many trees offering a lot of shade in summer days, that leads to Vrboska, and it is perfect for walking along. Besides swimming in the sea, tourists can also enjoy several other sports.
